The Government of Fiji has introduced the new Accident Compensation Act 2017 and it comes into effect from 1 January 2018. Under this Act the Accident Compensation Commission of Fiji has been established.
From the 1st of January 2018 you are no longer required to get insurance to cover personal injury or death as a result of a motor vehicle accident in Fiji.
For any accidents that occur from the 1st of January, you will now make an application to the Accident Compensation Commission of Fiji for compensation.
So do you need to do anything?
You do not need to do anything until your Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance cover expires. You will then be required to pay a Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) levy to any LTA office. The LTA will be available to receive MVA Levies from the 2nd of January 2018.
If you have an accident before 1 January 2018 or you have had an accident but haven’t yet claimed you will still be covered under the CTP policy that was in place at the time of the accident (subject to the terms and conditions).
